The BioHealth field of excellence was established at the University of Graz on January 1st 2019. The aim is, on one hand, to better understand the causes of disease-related changes at a molecular level and, on the other hand, to develop novel interventions to maintain or restore a healthy state throughout life and especially in old age.

BioHealth is characterized by the characteristic of several interlinked research areas. All of them require a comprehensive understanding of the molecular basis, structures and functioning of cellular processes as well as of proteins, enzymes and, in some cases, molecules. As a basis, the researchers mainly use various model organisms that are very similar to human cells in terms of cellular organization and biochemical metabolic processes, which is why the findings can easily be transferred to human cells. In the laboratory, complex processes can be reproduced and analyzed in this way.
